How to clean iPhone screen

There’s no way around, you use your iPhone every single day. You use your iPhone to stay in contact, listen to music, or watch videos, and you probably even use it to help find your way around. Inevitably, it goes without saying that your screen will get dirty. Whether it’s from dirt or oils, smudges and fingerprints are bound to accumulate over time.

You might have noticed that a dirty screen can also impact how well you’re able to text or scroll through apps. A clean screen not only looks better but can also improve your device’s functionality. In this article, we’ll show you how to clean your phone screen and how to clean a screen protector.

The basics for how to clean iPhone screen

Cleaning your iPhone screen isn’t difficult, but you want to make sure you do it right. You don’t want to accidentally damage your phone because you were being careless with your upkeep. Here are a couple of best practices to keep in mind.

Before you polish iPhone screen

The last thing you’d want to do is accidentally send a message or share a random picture with your family or coworkers. So, before you try any of the steps below, make sure you power your iPhone off. It’s the best way to guarantee that you won’t accidentally open an app or delete something just because you’re touching the screen.

1. Use a microfiber cloth

Your iPhone screen is made of glass. That’s why a microfiber cloth is going to be the best for keeping it clean. Typically, you won’t need to apply a ton of pressure when you’re wiping your phone down. Using the soft cloth to gently wipe down the screen ensures you won’t scratch the glass. You can usually find a microfiber cloth at any eyeglass or electronics store.

2. Avoid using harsh chemicals

A common mistake many people make is using a window or glass cleaner to polish their iPhone screen. But you don’t want to use anything that’s alcohol-based, as it might damage the coating that’s applied to the screen.

A good rule of thumb is if it’s safe to use on your eyeglasses, then it’s safe for your iPhone screen — usually. Clearly, there are always exceptions, so you should still check. Hopefully, that gives you a better place to start when looking for a cleaner.

3. Use a small amount of water

Despite newer iPhone models being fairly water resistant, you should save it for a last-resort clearing solution. Use it sparingly. Make sure to dampen your microfiber cloth and don’t spray it directly onto your device. Wring out your cloth so that it’s not dripping and gently wipe the screen. You should also use a dry corner to get rid of streaks and any excess water left behind.

How to clean a screen protector on phone

Now, if you’re particularly worried about getting scratches on your screen, then there’s a good chance you probably have a screen protector on. Here are a few steps you can take to clean the underside of your screen protector.

1. Remove the screen protector carefully

As long as your screen protector isn’t attached with a glue adhesive, you can gently peel it up from one of the corners of the screen. You can just use your fingernail, or a piece of scotch tape can help you get a better grip on it. As you peel the screen protector off of your iPhone screen, it’s best to do it slowly and carefully to prevent tearing.

2. Clean the screen protector

This is where it gets a little tricky because, ultimately, speed is going to be the key to success. Before you peel the screen protector off of your phone, you’ll want to make sure you have all of your supplies within arm’s reach. There’s nothing more frustrating than cleaning a screen protector only to have more debris fall onto it as you’re reapplying it.

Once you have the screen protector off, the first thing you’ll want to try is blowing it off with a can of compressed air. This can help you remove dust and dirt without the worry of getting other debris on your protector.

If there are still things more gunk, you can use a microfiber cloth to wipe it down. However, a gentle touch is crucial here. You don’t want any fuzz or other particles that are on the microfiber cloth to get stuck to the screen protector.

Of course, you may need to use some liquid. Only use a dab of water on your microfiber cloth. Do not run your screen protector under or directly spray it with water. If you do need to use water, it’s absolutely critical that you get it completely dry before you try reapplying it to your screen.
