How to block websites on iPhone

The internet is a wonderful place — mostly. But we all know how easy it can be to get distracted by the worldwide web of information swirling around the internet. One minute you’re checking your email, and the next moment, you’ve fallen down a rabbit hole of cat videos.

In today’s fast-paced society, it’s crucial to stay focused, especially if you use your iPhone as a tool for work. Maybe you want to maintain your own productivity, so blocking certain websites can be a smart solution to help you on task. Or maybe you want to keep your child safe from the dangers and harmful content they might accidentally stumble onto while surfing.

In this article, I want to show you how to block websites on iPhone using Safari. You’ll read about how to block specific sites and how to set up a passcode to protect your content restrictions, so they can’t be easily changed by just anybody.

How to block websites on iPhone on Safari

While there’s no straightforward setting in Safari that will allow you to block websites, you can utilize the Screen Time feature to help you out with it. Here are the steps you’ll need to follow to help you block websites in Safari on your iPhone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Screen Time.
  3. If it’s not enabled, go ahead and tap Turn On Screen Time and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Now, go to Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  5. Toggle on Content & Privacy Restrictions at the top.
  6. Then, in the Content Restrictions section, tap Web Content.
  7. Choose features like Limit Adult Websites to help keep block sites with more adult content.

Don’t worry about turning Screen Time on because if you decide not to use it, turning it off is just as easy as turning it on. All you have to do is go to Settings once again, open Screen Time, and turn off Content & Privacy Restrictions. Alternatively, you can switch off whatever you’ve added (for instance, allow all websites in Content Restrictions > Web Content).

How to block certain websites on iPhone

If there are specific websites that you were hoping to block, then you’re in luck. Now that you know how to set up the Content & Privacy Restrictions using the Screen Time feature, all you have to do is follow these steps.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content.
  3. In the section labeled Never Allow, tap Add Website.
  4. Type in the URL of the website you want to block.
  5. Then, tap Done to finish.

Remember that this will only block websites in the native iOS browser, Safari. If you’re using another web browser on your iPhone, like Google Chrome, then you will need their individual settings for blocking options. For example, you can do it within App Limits in Screen Time in Settings of your iPhone.

Keep in mind that apps can include a simplified web browser as well. So, you may need to check the settings in those specific apps as well.

How to only allow specific websites on iPhone

Sometimes when you’re making a list, it’s easier — or shorter — to determine what you can do instead of all the things you can’t do. So, rather than trying to block many websites, it might be faster for you to only allow specific websites in Safari. Follow these steps to configure that feature:

  1. Go into the Settings app.
  2. Tap Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content.
  3. Select Allowed Websites.
  4. Tap Add Website.
  5. Then, enter the URL and tap Done.

How to set up a passcode to protect your content restrictions

You can also take your content restrictions a step further by adding a passcode to lock them. This will help make sure they’re not easily changed — either by a bad actor or a cheeky child that’s trying to get around the restrictions you’ve put into place. All in all, using a passcode will help prevent changes to your settings from happening without you knowing about it first.

Here are the steps you need to follow to set up a passcode for your content restrictions:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Screen Time > Use Screen Time Passcode.
  3. Enter a four-digit passcode and then type it in again to confirm it.

Now, every time you want to make a change to your Screen Time settings, you’ll need to enter this new passcode.

Remember, just like any other passphrase, it’s critical to keep this confidential. Don’t share it with others and avoid using easily guessable codes like “1234,” four same numbers, or your birth year.

Blocking websites on your iPhone is an effective way to maintain focus, protect your children from harmful content, or take control of your digital life. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can easily block websites on Safari. You’re also able to block specific websites and secure your content restrictions with a passcode.

Remember, though, that blocking websites is only one aspect of managing your online experience. It’s also essential to educate yourself and your loved ones about safe browsing habits and the importance of digital well-being. Encourage open communication about internet usage and set clear boundaries to foster a healthy relationship with technology.

As technology continues to evolve, it’s crucial to stay informed about the latest tools and features that can help you maintain a positive and focused online experience. Keep an eye out for new updates and capabilities on your iPhone and don’t hesitate to explore additional methods for customizing your digital environment to suit your unique needs.

Your iPhone is a powerful tool that can be tailored to your preferences. By taking advantage of the built-in features, you can block websites and create a more focused, safe, and enjoyable browsing experience for yourself and your family.
